ARMY IN FRANCE

France, Aug, 12, 1917.
Dear Mother:
I will write you a few lines and
let you all know I am still alive.
I got a letter from you and you
said you had not heard from me
since I left Canada. I wrote two or
three letters and never heard from
any one so quit. Well this is some
place and the war is just the same
as ever. We have been out on rest
for a month and don't know how
long it will last.

It is just harvest time here and
things look nice only up where the
Huns have been and that is in
an awful shape. Well we have had
a touch of real war, suppose you
read all about it. What do the people
over there think of it now?

Well tell the girls all to write
to me and any of the rest of the
folks as I would be glad to have
from them. Tell Uncle George I
would like to hear from him. I
hope grandma is still well.

There is quite a lot of fruit in
this country, just such a country
as home as near as you could tell
it. We get quite a lot of things in
parcels from different places, tobacco
cigarettes and stuff to eat and
socks and all kinds of stuff from
Canada. I want you to find out
what Reg Lefoy is in and let me
know as I might find him. I have
met quite a lot of fellows I know
I have never seen any of the
state troops yet and don't suppose
I would see any one I knew if
I did.

I was sure surprised to hear
Fred Lewis had joined the army.

We have lost quite a lot of our
boys that came over with us. I have
seen quite a few things that if
some one had told me a few years
ago I would have though they
were crazy. Tell Bert and Mrs.
Bartlett hello and would like to
hear from them. Well I don't know
when this war will be over but
wish I did. I don't know much to
write so think I will close. I am in
tine 49th Bath. Any one you know
that is over here let me know their
address so I can try and find
them. Well good bye, hoping to
hear from you soon I am as ever
your son and brother.

Note: Parents of Charles William "Charlie" Gill (1883-1972) were Thomas Pendall "Tom" Gill and Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Harwood. Charles was married to Clara Esther Heath.
