I suspect whoever submitted the obituary just got their facts confused. Here's Rueben's official death record and his mother is listed as Elizabeth House. Someone got his mother's maiden name mixed up with his first wife's maiden name. She had been deceased for 40 years at the time of his death.

Here's Rueben and Charlotte Wise's marriage record in Illinois in 1949:

There are two death records for their children which both list their mother's names as Charlotte Wise.

And in the 1925 Appanoose state census two of their children still alive listed their father as Rueben Raney and mother as Charlotte Wice.

Just as a matter of personal interest, I grew up on a farm in Douglas Township that was originally owned by members of the Raney family.
