Here's a 1875 map of Pleasant township from the Appanoose County site. Note the location of C. S. Armstrong.

Then this text is from page 12 of the book "Cincinnati Memories 1875 - 1975".
"Tom Johnson, Ben Waymouth, Andrew Ross, Bob English and Charles Harrison sunk the mine known as Armstrong Coal Company in 1906. Charles Armstrong owned the land it was located on one mile west of the square. These men operated the mine for awhile and later sold out to the Armstrong Coal Co. of Kansas City. The miners nicknamed the mine "Big Tom" for big Tom Johnson the engineer. It was a large operation and had as many as 100 on the payroll. Vallie Duffey was employeed as bookkeeper and the ofice was above the Hugh Steel Drug Store. The mine closed in 1936 and now one can see only the "Big Tom" pond and the leveled shale dump."
Note that all references to place are of Cincinnati. There's nothing on Clannie Earles.
