Sarah Jane McCullum (widow) remarried to John Thompson in Scotland County, Missouri on 12 September 1850. John's wife Mary Anne Knott died in March 1850 (probably in Davis County, Iowa), leaving him with six children ranging in age from 2 to 15 years. The 1850 census of Davis County, Iowa (Grove Township, p. 298), dated 8 October 1850, shows a household with John, Sarah Jane (age 33, born in Kentucky), John's six children, and Sarah Jane's seven children from her first marriage (misnamed named McCullough in this census): Sarah (age 13), Richard F. (age 11), Susan M. (age 9), Catharine N. (age 7), William J. (age 6), Adam (age 3), and Eliza J. (age 1). It looks like Sarah Jane moved from Kentucky to Iowa between 1846 and 1849. Eliza J. was born in Iowa. I guess Sarah Jane's first husband died there between 1848 and 1850.
This family is listed in the 1860 census of Schuyler County, Missouri (Salt River Township, page 140). John's wife is named Polly in this census, but the 1870 census of Schuyler County, Missouri (Glenwood Township, page 16/320) shows her again as Jane. I can't find them after 1870.
John Thompson's son William M. Thompson (born 24 September 1836 in Perry County, Missouri) is my 2nd-great-grandfather.
