John W. Philby former resident here succumbs
Ella Christy of Centerville was with uncle for past six weeks; rites Wednesday
John W. Philby of Sioux City, Ia., passed away at his home Saturday night at 8:45 p.m. after a lingering illness. He was 75 years old Saturday. For the past 47 years he was a resident of Leeds. He was born in Alden, Lancaster County, England, Sept. 25, 1862 and came to the United States with his parents when an infant. Mr. Philby came to Iowa from Pennsylvania and settled in Centerville, Ia., later coming to Leeds. He was married to Lola Adams of Seymour, Ia.
Until 5 years ago, when he retired, he was a conductor for the Great Northern R. R. A son, Bert, who was killed 10 years ago in July, was also a conductor for the Great Northern Railroad.
Surviving are his wife Lola and one sister, Mrs. Joe Rear of Santa Ana, Calif., 2 grand children, Mrs. Nadine Dawson, Mr. Loren Philby, both of Sioux City. The body is at the Anderson funeral home. Services will be Wednesday at 2:30 at the Methodist church in Leeds.
A niece, Ella Christy of Centerville has been with Mr. Philby the past 6 weeks helping to care for him and had returned home just a week ago thinking he was on the road to recovery. He took a sudden change and had passed away before she could return to his bedside.
