James Robert Rucker was born March 4, 1822 in Columbia, Adair County KY. He married Hannah Ellis on March 20, 1853 in Ogle County IL. James moved from the Springfield IL area in 1844 to Ogle County IL. In 1850 he came to Iowa and bought 35 acres. then he went to Ness County KS and farmed for 3 years. In 1853 he came to Appanoose County where his brother Milton Rucker had moved. His occupations were agriculture, farmer, schoolboard president and road supervisor. In the 1896 census they had land in Washington township, section 29. James & Hannah had 10 children: Thomas Carter (12-10-1853), Phoebe Jane (1856), Henrietta "Rhett" (1858), Melissa Ovella (3-9-1860), Ernest (1862), Ullyses Sherman (1-5-1865), Hammon Ellis (1-26-1866),Francis Stanton (4-20-1870), Milton (1873), Cora Eva (1877).
James died Oct. 30, 1898 in Moulton IA. He is buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Moulton IA.
