Diana,
It appears that William & Catherine had 4 children: Mary, James, Thomas & Bridget. I was unable to find what happened to the parents after the 1870 census, but I believe the 4 children went to Clayton county. At the time of the 1880 U.S. census, I think I located Mary living with a family as a servant/cook in McGregor.
Same census, if I may have found Bridget. She is named as Annie Wynne & is the right age. Living with another family in McGregor, working as a servant.
The 1885 Iowa State census enumerated James living in McGregor.
Thomas drowned in the Mississippi river near McGregor in Oct. 1880 and is buried in Paint Rock / aka St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery, Taylor twp. Allamakee co. I've posted the newspaper account of his death on the Obit Board, link below. Also in Paint Rock cemetery is Alfred Wynn -- no dates, a CW soldier.
Is it possible that Alfred and William are the same person?
