DIED - At Lansing, Iowa, on the morning of the 29th day of March, 1878, of lung fever, Roy V. only child of V.S. and Ella Parker, aged seventeen months and one day.

The Darkened Home - Little Roy

Little Roy is sweetly sleeping,
And a home is darkened now,
For the parents, mourning, weeping,
Wiped the death damp from his brow.

Bright and beautiful he vanished
From a world of care and woe,
And the parents' joys are banished,
While the tears of anguish flow.

'Round their hearts so strongly twining,
Oh, how sad to give him up!
For the loved one they are pining
They have quaffed the bitter cup.

In the very depths of sorrow,
In the midst of blinding tears,
They may consolation borrow,
For a ray of light appears.

In the dark of earthly blindness
They may murmur and rebel,
But the Saviour, in his kindness,
Took him hence, in heaven to dwell.

Though no more they hear the patter
Of his precious little feet,
'Round their lives bright joys to scatter,
They may hope in heaven to meet.

Though no more his smiles may cheer them,
Though no more his voice be heard,
May they feel he lingers near them
Watching every act and word.

May their lives be nobler, better
That their darling lived and died,
When they too shall break life's fetter,
May they safely homeward glide.

Little Roy will watch the portal,
And with outstretched arms will wait
With his infant charms immortal,
Bid them welcome at the gate.

Then again may they caress him,
Freed from every anxious fear;
He in heaven lives but to bless them
Bless them as he could not here.

Little Roy, with troubles over,
Sleeps beneath the pliant soil;
Under green grass and the clover,
Sleeps exempt from all life's toil.

In the midst of all this sorrow,
With their home so dark and drear,
Let the hope of heaven's to-morrow,
Drive away each scalding tear.

Note: Verrillas Parker operated a photography gallery in Lansing during the late 1870's. He later removed to New Hampton. It is possible that Verrillas is little Roy's father.
