HAROLD AND WILMA "SIS" ADAMSON
By Bob DautHarold O. Adamson was born September 16, 1910, at home, Prussia Township, Adair County, to George Ellsworth and Margaretha (Eckardt) Adamson. He attended Prussia Township No. 8 country school and then attended Greenfield High School, graduating in 1929. Harold participated in football, basketball and track. As a junior, the 1927 football team lost only one game and in Harold's 1928 senior season, the Tigers became the only undefeated, untied GHS football team for the next 50 years. After graduation Harold worked at home until marriage.
Wilma M. "Sis" Smith was born July 17, 1913, at home, Arbor Hill, Adair County, to Thomas G. and Vernica Mae (Bunce) Smith. She grew up on Middle River fishing, swimming, ice skating, riding ponies and playing baseball on Charlie Beaman's field many Sunday afternoons. She attended country school and then attended Greenfield High School emphasizing Norman School Training, and graduated in 1929. Sis taught from 1931-1933 at the same Harrison No. 8 she had attended as a student. This was the school building moved to the Adair County Historical Center late in the 20th Century.
Harold and Sis were married March 18, 1933, in Maryville, Missouri. They became the parents of one daughter, Sharon, born February 23, 1938. The Adamsons lived on several Adair County farms before finally purchasing the 160-acre Dermo farm in Grove Township. They farmed there from 1945-1975. When Sis and Harold retired, they moved to their newly built home at 201 NW 4th St., Greenfield.
Harold is a 50-year Farm Bureau member and a 20-year Lions Club member. He enjoys quilting, woodworking and sports. Harold participated in many area and state fair horseshoe pitching contests, winning numerous championships in all classes. Sis enjoys Chicago Cubs baseball and reading.
Sis and Harold are members of the Greenfield United Methodist Church and celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in 2001. They have lived their whole lives in Adair County and have seen many, many changes in their lifetime.
