EARL ABBOTT FAMILY
By Nanette AbbottEarl Dale Abbott was born in Union County, Iowa, on May 18, 1924. to Elmer and Sarah (Gray) Abbott. His parents were both born in Grove Township, Adair County, Adair County, and when Earl was young, the family settled on a farm in Grove Township. Earl graduated from Greenfield High School with the Class of 1942 where he participated in football, track and baseball. He served om the Army during WWII as a radio operator and was stationed in Europe for on and one-half years years. After the war Earl returned to Adair County where he bought a hay baler, baling for his dad, brother-in-law, Floyd Price, and also doing custom work. Later he got a job as a lineman for AT&T.
Helen Hall was born in Northfield, Minnesota, on May 26, 1926, to William and Adelaide Hall. After graduating from high school, she worked as a switchboard operator in Northfield for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.
Earl's work for AT&T took him to Northfield where he and Helen met at a telephone company dance. They were married on June 4, 1949. When Earl was laid off from AT&T, he got a job with a plumbing company. Earl and Helen eventually settled in Fairbault, Minnesota. Earl had a master plumber's license and in his 50s, went back to school and earned a journeyman pipe fitter license. He was good at everything he did, from working on cars to remodeling their home. Helen sewed, quilted and also crocheted many beautiful doilies and they both enjoyed going to auctions. They had three children. Karen 1952, Nanette 1958, and Lisa 1960. Earl died in June 1985 and Helen died in September of 1994 and they are buried in Northfield, Minnesota.
