CARL AND MILDRED (TURIN) ABBOTT

Carl Speedling Abbott was born February 12, 1909, to Vern and Leona Abbott in Orient, Iowa, and died May 25, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Center in Fontanelle at the age of 92. He graduated from Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa.

On December 24, 1931, Carl married Mildred G. Turin from Kiron, Iowa. She was born May 22, 1909, and died October 1993. She graduated from Iowa State College with a degree in home economics.

They had one daughter, Leanore, born April 8 1933. They lived on a farm in Adair County for three years and for two years in Ida County before starting the Coast-to-Coast store in Greenfield in 1937, which they ran 25 years. Both were very involved in the store. Mildred was the accountant, paid the bills and taxes and was very good in her ability to manage that end of the partnership. Carl was the up-front person, waiting on customers from all over Adair County, and getting great pleasure out of answering their hardware questions. They conducted themselves with integrity and honesty in their business dealings, which certainly contributed to their success.

Carl was on the Greenfield City Council for several years, and both were members of many community organizations. Although a very successful businessman, he was involved in farming all of this life, winning awards for his innovative soil conservation practices.

During retirement Carl and Mildred spent a lot of time in Ft. Myers, Florida, fishing, bicycle riding and dancing.

Their daughter, Leanore "Lee" Goode, and husband, Bob, live in West Hartford, Connecticut. Leanore graduated from State University of Iowa in 1955 and Bob in 1952. He received his MBA from Michigan University in 1955.

They have three daughters. Laura Keller and husband, Charles of Laguna Beach, California, have twins, Charles and Kelly. Laura graduated from the University of Vermont and Boston College. Diane Goode and husband, Anthony Fons of Avon, Connecticut, have daughters Kelsey, Hailey and Mallory. Diana graduated from Dartmouth College. Carla Ryan and husband, Christopher, of Briar Cliff Manor, New York, have one Son, Jack. Carla graduated from Lafayette College.
