He was industrious and energetic, working diligently at whatever he could find to do. He stayed in New York for four years, during which time he married Mary Conboy. In 1853 they moved to Chicago, then a wilderness with a few shanties. In Chicago he worked at laying bricks for the first railroad built there. In 1854, anxious to see more of this wonderful land, they and their little daughter, moved to the state of Iowa at the place that is now Elkader, Clayton County, Iowa. After a short time, through hard work and frugalty, he saved enough to bring the remaining family to America to be near him. This remaining family consisted of his father, five brothers and one sister. They all made homes near him. When his wife, Mary Conboy, died on May 6, 1869 , she left him with eight children to care for. Some five years later he married Mary Ann Nevins. She died three and one half years later, leaving him two more children. After thirten more years , in 1892, he disposed of his farm and came to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Michael Borman, near Black Earth, Wisconsin. He enjoyed there his grandchildren and his armchair by the fireside. He died April 26, 1909, Monday, 10:30 P.M. of gangerine. He was 80. |
