Obituary
Harmon Henry Schmidt
Mr. Harmon Henry Schmidt was born in Prussia, Germany, Harford Mindon county, July 25, 1816; came to America and landed at New Orleans December 25, 1844, and then moved to Guttenburg, Clayton county, Iowa, and lived in that neighborhood 20 years.
In 1864 he came to Benton county. In 1895 he moved with his son Edward to Dickinson county where he lived until 1904. Since that time he lived with his daughter Mrs. Margaret Young, Newhall, Iowa, until his death on January 20th 1907 at 9 o'clock a.m.
Although Mr. Schmidt had been afflicted with eczema for 40 years he lived to the extreme old age of 90 years 5 months and 26 days.
Mr. Schmidt has nine children living, three of his first union Mrs. Mary Backhaus William and Herman Schmidt; and six of his second union Mrs. Margaret Young, Mrs. Sophia Warnk, Edward Schmidt, Paul Schmidt, Catherine Andrew, George Schmidt and one stepson, Frederick Ahrand. He had one son and one stepson in the army, both of whom are dead. John Ahrand, his stepson, died from the effect of being confined in the Andersonville prison, and his son Henry died in the hospital at Keokuk, Iowa. Mr. Schmidt leaves 9 children, 1 stepson, 45 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren to mourn their loss.
He was a member of the Moravian church. The funeral services conducted by Rev. A. J. Gregg were held at the Central Presbyterian church of Newhall Wednesday, Jan. 23d, 1907, and the interment in the English cemetery five miles southwest of Newhall.

Mrs. Charles Schmidt of Watkins Dies at 74

Mrs. Charles Schmidt, 74, of Watkins died Saturday at 4 p.m. at her home after a brief illness. Born Feb. 11, 1881, at Fairfax, she had lived most of her life in the Watkins area
Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary May 29, 1950. Mr. Schmidt survives
Other survivors are four sons, Arthur, Clayton, Gilbert and Richard; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas Gibney; a brother, Matt Spellerberg, Fairfax; a sister, Mrs. Rose Tehel, Norway; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Maurice Tracy at 9 a.m. Tuesdy in St. Patrick's church at Watkins, where Mrs. Schimidt was a member. Burial will be at St. Michael's cemetery, Norway
The body will be taken Sunday evening from the Teahen chapel to the Schmidt home, where the Rosary will be recited by Father Tracy Sunday and Monday at 8 p.m. and by the Altar and Rosary Society at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
