Michael Hickey

Short Sketch of the Life of Michael Hickey. Van Horne Record - Michael Hickey was born in Limerick. Ireland, and came to this country when ten years of age. He died in the faith of the church he loved and at the place on which he had lived for more than thirty-five years, August 12, 1903, at the age of 60 years.

Funeral services were held at the residence and the church Friday. Aug 14, at 9 o’clock, a. m.

Solemn requeim mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Hartigan of Marion, assisted by Rev. Fathers Sheehy, of Vinton, and Hogan, of this place.

Miss Lydia Donahue, of Chicago, sang, assisted at the organ by Mrs. Daniel Hickey. of Marion.

The funeral was arranged according to his wishes by Messrs Matt. Dare and Michael Parry. His six nephews who acted as pall bearers were William and Edward Donahue, William and John Hickey, and William and Patrick Cantwell.

Interment was in the South Union cemetery.

On August 27. 1861, he was married to Joanna Shea, by Father Emins of Iowa City. Nine children were born to this union, eight of whom survive: James. Thomas, Mary, Bridget, William, Daniel, Michael and Margaret. Four brothers and two sisters are also left to mourn: they are Mrs. Bridget Donahue, Mrs. Paul Cantwell. Sr., James of Van Horne, Thomas of Waterloo, and William of St. Paul.

Mr. Hickey was a kind father, a loving husband and a true friend. He lived a long and useful life and our hearts go out to them, whom be has left behind to mourn his loss.
