Portrait and Biographical Album of Benton County, Iowa
Chicago: Chapman Brothers, 1887

FRANKLIN P. STEWART, deceased, was a native of Virginia, born Feb. 15, 1833, his parents being John and Rebecca Stewart. At the breaking out of the Mexican War, our subject enlisted and served during the entire period. In 1858 he moved to Benton County, Iowa, where he engaged in farming. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. D, 28th Iowa Vol. Inf., and participated in fifteen general engagements, including Port Gibson, siege of Vicksburg, and the Red River expedition. His last battle was at Sabina Cross Roads. About this time he was taken sick and sent to the hospital, and after being there a short time he was sent home on a sick furlough, and died Sept. 19, 1864, five weeks after reaching home. His wife was Margaret Steward, born in Zanesville, Ohio, Dec. 22, 1832, and a daughter of John and Jane (Chambers) Steward, of Chambersburg, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart were the parents of five children — Mary, Ella C., Rebecca E., John F. and Susan. Mr. Stewart was a stanch supporter of the Republican party, and cast his last ballot for Abraham Lincoln. He was a consistent Christian, a member of the United Brethren Church, honest and upright in his dealings, and highly respected by his friends and acquaintances, possessing the confidence and esteem of all. Mrs. Stewart is still living in Vinton and is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
