AMOS STONE, a retired farmer and capitalist, and one of Belle Plaine's most respected citizens, who has been a resident of the city since 1866, was born in the town of Groton, Middlesex Co., Mass., Dec. 4, 1813, and is the son of Amos and Hannah (Farnsworth) Stone. He was reared a farmer in his native State, and was married at Groton, the native place of his wife, May 1, 1838, to Miss Caroline E. Blood, a daughter of Joseph Blood. Mrs. Stone became the mother of five children, two sons and three daughters: Frances C., now the wife of George Norton, of St. Charles, Ill.; Sarah E., wife of A. H. Bell, a jeweler, of Belle Plaine; Mary A. O., the wife of H. T. Rockwell, died April 2, 1871; Henry A., married Miss May Dickmann, and resides at Vandalia, Ill.; George W., married Miss Clara Williamson, and resides at Burlington.Soon after his marriage Mr. Stone emigrated to the Prairie State, settling in St. Charles, Kane County, where he was engaged in farming and stock-growing till 1866, at which time he became impressed with the superior advantages of this State, sold out and removed to Belle Plaine, where he has since been a resident, and has been engaged in money-loaning and the real-estate business. Mrs. Stone lived to rear her family, and died at Belle Plaine, on the 5th of April, 1872. Mr. Stone was again married, Nov. 27, 1872, to Miss Keren H. Sykes, daughter of David and Persa (Nicholson) Sykes; she is a native of New York, being born in Lewis, Essex County. Her parents were natives of New Kngland, her father having been born at Dorset, Vt., and her mother at Hartford, Conn.
Mr. and Mrs. Stone are members of the Congregational Church. Mr. S. held the offices of Justice of the Peace and Assessor in Kane County, Ill., and has held various minor offices since being a resident of Belle Plaine. In politics he is a Republican. He is a Master Mason, and a member of Hope Lodge No. 175, of Belle Plaine. Mr. Stone has been a resident of Belle Plaine for upward of twenty years, and by his honorable and upright life has won an enviable reputation for the sterling traits of character that always command respect and esteem.
