THOMAS A. CARVER, late editor and proprietor of the Saturday Morning Call, Shellsburg,
is a native of Iowa, born in Linn County, April 24, 1860. His father, Thomas B. Carver,
was born in Ohio, and when a young man came to Iowa, locating in Linn County, where his
marriage took place with Elizabeth Deane, a native of Ohio. He was a farmer by occupation,
and in 1862 he entered his country's service, enlisting in Co. I, 20th Iowa Vol. Inf.,
and died at New Orleans in the spring of 1864, while yet in the service. His widow is now
residing in Shellsburg. There were four children in the parental family, one of whom died
in infancy and three are yet living — Sarah E., who is the wife of Mont La Tourette;
Tabitha J., now the wife of G. W. Reynolds, and Thomas A., the subject of this sketch.
Thomas received his education in the common schools and in June, 1878, entered the office
of the Shellsburg Record, where he served three years, and then purchased an interest
in the paper, being associated as partner in its publication about one year. In February,
1882, he sold his interest in the Record and purchased a half interest in the Jasper
Times. He removed to that place, and on May 1 following he became sole proprietor of the
Times. In June, 1884, and for a few months afterward he worked in the office of the
Cedar Rapids Republican. In October, 1884, he returned to Shellsburg and established
the Saturday Morning Call, which he disposed of early in the spring of 1866.
On the 14th day of December, 1881, Mr. Carver was united in marriage with Ella Dickson,
who was born in Omaha, Neb., and is a daughter of Kennard Dickson. Mr. and Mrs. Carver
are the parents of three children — Frank S., Robert W. and Cleata May.
