IOWA MEN GET COMMISSIONS--
Among the Iowa men who received commissions after three months intensive training at Fort Snelling we find an occasional one from this section of the state. They are---
First Lieutenant, E. S. Harding, Casey. |
First Lieutenant, H. E. Wonder, Harlan. |
Second Lieutenant, R. J. Fritz, Atlantic. |
Second Lieutenant artillery, G. R. Hill, Guthrie Center. |
Quarter Masters Corps Second Lieutenants:
A. R. Shepherd, Harlan
F. C. Caswell, Coon Rapids. |
BE KIND TO THE SOLDIERS FAMILIES
Right now when the young men of Iowa are being enlisted and when the question of the care of the families is squarely before the State let us again get in mind that in Canada the state pays the family of every soldier $20.00 a month and also that a patriotic fund of over thirty millions Dollars has been contributed and out of it a fixed allowance is given to every wife and mother in addition to the state.
With all our talk on this side of the oine about caring for the families of the boys who are to fight, we have actually done nothing.
The soldier receives $1.00 a day while his Canadian brother receives $1.10 his family receives nothing when the family of his Canadian brother may, if there are children receive as high as forty dollars a month.
It is awful easy here in America to satisfy ourselves with speaking about being generous. There ought to be some definate action here for the families of those who go, backed by real money.

SEND US THE NAMES OF OUR SOLDIER BOYS
If you will send us the names and address of our soldier boys in camp or at the front we will endeavor to send them reading matter every week without a cent of cost to them. Send in the names and addresses.
EXEMPTION RULING
The latest ruling as we go to press from Provost Marshall Crowder is to the effect...
"That religious scruples will not exempt a man.
He can be taken into the army and set to peeling potatoes or something like that if he is averse to carrying a musket."
