1888 Emma Larson granted the Dalby school a holiday vacation of a week and came home. She made a futile attempt to return to Dalby on January 1, as the mountains of snow on Columbus ridge were insurmountable. she succeeded on the 2d after D. Fitzgerald with a large force of men had tunneled from the 'summit' south and F. Martin with a force of large men had made some prodigious cuts through the huge mas on the north slope. ~Lansing Mirror, Friday, January 6, 1888, pg 3 ~contributed by S. 1893 Miss Emma Larson teacher, closed a full term at Darby school on the 9th inst. with an entertainment on the 8th. Miss Larson avails herself of every opportunity to improve herself by attending, during school intervals, stricly progressive American schools. Miss Larson has taught the same school in district No. 7, Center, six different terms so further comment is unneccessary there. The school is large, 39 pupils being enrolled. ~Lansing Mirror, Friday, March 17, 1893, pg 1 ~contributed by S. Ferrall. |

1941 Quick-Thinking Boy Saves Teacher's Life A quick-thinking Waukon rural school student saved his teacher from possible fatal burns Friday. The teacher, Miss Dorothy Pearson, 23, of District No.7, Center township, was severely burned about the face and arms when by mistake she used gasoline to start a fire in the school stove. She had been in the habit of taking kerosene from her home to the school. As she struck a match the gasoline in the stove exploded, enveloping her in flames. Charles Christians, one of the pupils quickly grabbed his coat and wrapped it around Miss Pearson, smothering the flames. ~The Cedar Rapids Gazette, Monday, November 3, 1941, pg 11 ~contributed by Cindy (Maust) Smith |
