Biography of Henry Dayton




Honorable Henry Dayton, Representative from Allamakee County, is a native of Saratoga County, New York, born September 3, 1836. Brought up in his native place 'till twenty-one years of age, he received his education at the New York Conference Seminary and at Fort Edward Collegiate Institute, and read law at
Batesville, Arkansas, and at Decorah, Iowa, and was admitted to the bar in 1862. In that year he settled at Lansing and engaged in surveying, as County Surveyor, etc., which he continued about eight years -- 'till 1870, in which year he removed to Waukon, and commenced the practice of law, which he has ever since continued. In the Fall of 1872 he was elected to the State Legislature, and re-elected in 1874. He was elected to the Legislature on the Democratic ticket. Mr. Dayton was married in Waukon, May 1874, to Miss Mary M. Wilcox, formerly of Washington County, New York.
